Write a book
Take some time off and write a (probably cynical) book about the ghettoisation of digital ( or something perkier)
- pro – would be cathartic
- pro – suspect I may have something interesting to say if I put my mind to it
- pro – suspect it could be done in parallel with other options
- pro – well connected to lots of folk in the publishing world so if I wanted to do it the ‘traditional’ way somebody might take it
- con – hmmm guess I would have to come up with an outline / ideas 😉
- con – would probably be crap 😉
books don’t make money. You have to pump them out 1 a year for life, and get into the lecture circuit to make up the rest of your income. To pump out a book once a year, you have to observe a trend, and give it a corny name like Purple Cow or something then go on about how that’s the next big thing. Oh wait, that’s Seth Godin’s formula…
Although what HolyTornado says is true, having written a book can enhance your career and so make you money indirectly (assuming it’s good!). I wouldn’t take time off to do this if I were you, but if you have it all in your head (or half of it) anyway, then it could go quite quickly…
Of course, I’ve yet to publish one myself, but if you want to brainstorm, I’m happy to help.
Totally agree – and yes I’ll be taking you up on that 😉
Write the frakkin book! Yes it will require an outline. Make sure and include dick jokes.
Books and articles can spin off consulting work. You could start with a regular, wise-ass kind of column in an influential mag…
